Uke at the enbukai

24 05 2012

Even if he was injured at a shoulder (and I had a twisted ankle), Ondřej Malina performed also the enbukai at Saku and I was the second uke.

..on a second thought I have to add something: check my comment below!

Other demos have been posted earlier!

Actually, more I watch the enbukai, more I realized I should have pushed more with my ukemi! Even if Ondrej was relaxed and soft in his execution, more focused no the nice form than on big throws, this was still a demonstration. My ukemi, perfectly ok for practice, I do not think is enough good for an enbukai. In this situation it is true that uke can decide mostly by himself which kind of ukemi take. Since I trust my way to fall, even if I had a bandaged ankle (but thanks to quite good pain killers I did not feel any pain!), I should have taken more “exhibition” style kind of ukemi.

Anyway, thanks to Sverre for being positive and Karsten, I think, for being ironic and not too negative…

But I must agree more with Andrew’s surprise about me being a black belt, especially watching this video!!

I have to admit, I thought your ukemi did look a bit , for lack of a better word, ungraceful but a nice demo non the less. Everyone seems to be going to these demonstrations and seminars right now, I feel like I am missing out :p

I am not sure what you mean for *these demonstrations and seminars*.. I have been going to seminar since.. the beginning.. I just did not have the blog! And not all seminars have an enbukai. This was a little special.

The one that my friend Sverre posted was IAF 2008, huge Aikido meeting in Tanabe (check on youtube!!) and the video is about the demonstration of the “Norwegian” group (I’m not Norwegian citizen, but Aikido-wise I’m very Norwegian!) during a wonderful and incredible afternoon at Kumano temple where all the nation present had enbukai, and at the end hombu dojo teachers. Differently from most of other nations, from Norway there was not any high graded teachers, so we participated as group of 3 pairs, changing tori-uke..

Trust me, among the most exciting 90 seconds of my life!!!

Sverre and I are the ones in the middle.. 🙂

Anyway, my friend, any time you have a chance you should just travel and practice in seminars!! Or at least is what my teachers always told me!!!

Maybe one day we’ll meet and I hope I will be able to show you my ukemi is usually less… crappy! (that was the word!! thanks for sweeten that up!)

Sorry, forgive my being rather vague. What I meant there was that there seems to be alot of seminars going on at the moment and many of the people whose blogs I read or converse with in one way or another seem to be heading along to them while I am unable to for one reason or another. My club’s head dojo is hosting a 3 day summer camp in 2 weeks and I can’t attend and it is very frustrating.

Thanks again for sharing the video and the blog in general!

Andy – I thought u were ukemi was fine. I’ve seen better, but I’m not going to judge.

That begin said, I saw both videos; Endo Sensei could be abrupt – but that’s to be expected from a demo. Is Endo Sensei experienced in any other martial art? I sense some Judo in him, especially at 0:20.

Paul – That blows that you can’t go to the seminar. For me I just do what I can and train as many times on the “important” dates as I can.
