Aikido Glossary Update

9 04 2020

After ages, a quite needed update of one of my most clicked pages was done: Aikido Glossary has been reviewed and some corrections/references to very useful comments made.

It is a live page that I had not followed enough, as the rest of the blog, but I still hope is visitors contributions and corrections, and also hope someone else will find it useful and/or interesting.

2 sections have been added (after too long I must say):

Weapon Practice

External Credits

..and quite a bit reviewing and corrections thanks to the comment section have been also done.

I hope it serves and interests more people than just myself and if anyone is interested in using some of my work here, I’d love just a reference back 🙂

I got a remote hope/ambition to make an equally complete glossary for Iaido, another part of my life, unfortunately mostly past life. Let’s see how it will go!

Values & Time, Water & Teflon

19 09 2016

It is the time to say goodbye to shoes I had bought for 14.90 € thinking that if they lasted 3 months it would have been a good investment.

A long road

They lasted about 18 months, they have walked me all around Europe, in Japan, I’m Indonesia and in Vietnam.

I have learnt to give value to everything and everyone independently by the time things and people are around. Because this time can be short.

I have had 3 relevant relationships in my life of which the longest lasted about 3 years “on paper” but in reality maybe less than 3 months and the best most spontaneous and natural part has been the first 3 hours.. I valued most of the time with her and looking back I regret I did not enjoy more. But I have no other regrets. Read the rest of this entry »

Yamashima sensei: center center center!!

17 09 2015

Really inspiring weekend in Stockholm where I met for the first time Yamashima sensei, 7.dan Aikikai: I had heard a lot about the practice with him, recommended by different teachers and aikidokas here and there. And my first impression has been extremely good, looking forward for a chance to practice with him again probably in the Netherlands later this year.

Vanadis Aikido dojo

Vanadis Aikido dojo

Of course for me being in Stockholm is always special, always bring extra good feelings, it can be for Aikido or not.

Of course it is even more special when you have the chance to practice with people like Jorma Lyly, Vanadis Aikido dojo, and Peter Spangfort, Järfälla Aikidoklubb, both amazing 6.dan Aikikai, with so much to give to any partner always in an accessible and special way. And I cannot even start naming all the other wonderful people on the mats, some of them practicing Aikido for more than 50 years (one session was at Stockholm Aikikai, club founded in 1964!!).

Of course I always enjoy discovering “new” teachers (for me), after having heard much about and then having a chance to “feel first hand” (never better expression used in Aikido!). Read the rest of this entry »

Long overdue

9 08 2015

I should have done it probably before the 2 Aikido summer camps in July but I always found reasons to postpone or laziness to avoid it. Yesterday finally I took the proper step and said bye bye to my own crappy and not uniform hair cut, with a good reset:

Long overdue cut

project beard continues.. I might need a Harley

Endo Shihan enbukai in Saku

17 05 2012

This is just a small but so relevant (for me) video from sensei demonstration at the 18th Saku International Aikidô Kenshûkai in Saku, Japan.

What I especially love in this video is a concept typical in Iaido but not so developed in Aikido: the concept of “seme“, 攻め, literally “attack, pressure”, that from my learning it is not a physical attack, but it is more metaphysical, psychological, expressed by the power transmitting from the eyes of the samurai, by the way, before drawing the sword, one looks at his opponent. Iaido is anyway “saya no uchi de katso“, the victory (the outcome) is in the scabbard, everything is decided before drawing the sword.

In Gorin no sho, “The Book of Five Rings” (五輪書 by Miyamoto Musashi), it is said: “The body merging with the katana, united, becoming one”. So it is not need a physical manifestation of the pressure you give to your opponent, to disrupt his sense of confidence and resolution, prior to an attack.

And this is exactly what sensei is doing toward the end of the video!

I can tell that the first time I saw Endo sensei freezing the strike of uke in midair just thanks to a sudden shift in his stare, I felt goosebumps! Not only timing, as sensei always says, but my mind jumped to my Iaido training: before performing any movement in the kata we had to visualize the scenario of the kata and then “be there”, mentally and psychologically, then transmit this presence not only with the cuts but with the eyes and full presence as well.

In Aikido we focus more on zanshin, 残心, the state of mind at the completion of an action (important in Iaido as well). Combining this with the feeling before any movement, with seme, the technique, if necessary, becomes whole. If your opponent has also a budo mind, probably would see in your eyes there is no need to fight.

Anyway, there are only my personal considerations: long time I do not practice Iaido and my teacher was never a recognized one. Also, being only at the beginning of my martial art path, if I wrote something too silly, please forgive me. But these are my feelings, my understanding for now.

I got more or less the full video (unfortunately lots of Japanese talking, bad audio, no English), but I have to uploaded to youtube (in some ways.. remember, the great firewall of China!!)..

Swatch FIVB Stavanger 2009

29 06 2009

Start of the second week of Swatch FIVB Stavanger 2009 beach volley tournament.. yes, second week! New formula this year for this special stop of the FIVB 2009 calendar: giving the great money investment from ConocoPhilips (probably before the Ekofisk problems 😉 ) the local tournament has become a clear sponsor hostage, more about business than sport! At least, this is my point of view!

Less fields with official games, more focus to the central arena, larger it seems than the previous years, where there are more matches for a paying audience. And a different structure: no more qualification and pool main draw first phase, but straight to the pool phase.

And that meant a serious cut down in the entry list, resulting in NO Japanese teams, neither male nor female.. Giving that my main interest are the female Japanese teams, this 2009 beach volley tournament in Stavanger lost most of its interest!!!

I have been a little around anyway taking pics, especially with Nikon D200 and the nice lenses, but I will not spend too much time for volley this year. I regret I will not enjoy as the previous years, but there will be pictures coming.

For now I post pictures of who I really miss:

Aikido AV babes!!!

28 05 2009

This is not a technical video!!!! The execution of the technique is horrible, but it is not always the main focus, not even during a “normal” seminar!! 😉

And probably for the Japanese AV (Adult Video!!) industry, it is already a huge step to include Aikido!! The girl look at the end is priceless!! 😀

I must admit I have (almost) never seen such beauties during an Aikido practice!!!

With Av idol, AV女優, at practice, I wish hakama was more like a mini skirt version, with of course no pants under.. 😛

I have been searching a bit about these two aikidokas in which dojo they practice.. apparently I must search better!

PS Thanks to Svein for finding this precious video 😉
